Malcom did talk to the preacher and they agreed to wait until Sunday for him to marry them. Reverend Durwood thought it best to sleep on it a few nights and make sure it was what they really wanted.

Part of Haley wondered if the pastor suggested they wait because he thought Haley needed more time to consider her options.

She knew her options and she knew what she wanted—to marry Malcom.

Haley was finishing loading up her wagon when Macey strolled over.

“Good morning.” Macey was chipper as usual.

“It was,” Haley said, biting her tongue to keep from adding, until you strolled over.

“I thought maybe I could ride with you today?” Macey rocked on her heels, her hands folded in front of her.

Haley’s hands stilled over their task. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

“Why?” Macey looked at Haley wide-eyed and innocent.

“You put me in an awkward position last night,” Haley said, “not to mention telling me that you and your parents are talking about me behind my back, which isn’t very Christian-like.”

“I’m sorry.” Macey’s eyes teared up. “I… I only wanted to bring up the subject of mail order brides to make Caleb think about me as a grown woman who is ready to get married.”

“You could have mentioned you were considering it without suggesting that I try it.” It was hard for Haley to stay angry with Macey, but she didn’t like the position it put her in. “You had all the men looking at me like a charity case and wanting to marry me out of pity.”

“Is that why Malcom asked you to marry him?”

Macey’s words stung like venom even if she didn’t mean them to be harsh. Was that why Malcom proposed? “How do you know he asked me?”

“I heard…” She started to point over her shoulder, then dropped her hand. “I overheard someone gossiping.”

Haley’s lips pursed together like she’d taken a bite out of a lemon instead of an orange. She stormed off in search of Malcom.

He was on his proverbial high horse when she spotted him, riding around like he was in charge—always Mr. Fix-it. She wasn’t a problem to be fixed and wouldn’t marry someone out of fake platitudes.

Malcom rode toward her and stopped. His smile faded when he saw her scowl. “What’s wrong?”

“I want to talk?”

“Now?” He looked around. “We’re getting ready to leave.”

“If I didn’t want to talk now, would I have bothered to come and find you?” She put her hands on her hips and continued to glare at him.

“Is this our first fight?” Malcom asked, climbing down from his horse. “Because I would like to get past the arguing and go right to making up. It’s so much better.”

She wasn’t smiling.

His eyes met hers. “What’s wrong?”

“Why did you ask me to marry you?” She had to know.

“Because I have strong feelings for you.”

“Are you sure you’re not just taking pity on me, like the other men?”

Malcom’s eyes flung wide open. “You are not some helpless wildflower and you’re sure a lot prettier.
